Power performance through positive intent
Our Tandem CEO Aisling Teillard on the transformation of performance management
Every major business magazine has featured headlines signaling the need to transform performance management. Kicking off a hot debate about the future direction of performance management. Everything was questioned β to rate or not to rate; to calibrate or not to calibrate. Organisations celebrated their bold moves while others hesitated, not convinced that the answers were yet understood. As we stand in 2020; where have we got to and what are the key lessons learned that we can take forward into real action?
One of the privileges we have working in Our Tandem is we get to talk to global organisations daily about their performance management practices. We can see some definitive trends that transcend industry and organisational size, that have made a real difference. We also get to see the other end of the spectrum where trans-formative moves have been triggered too early and caused real problems for HR and the wider organisation. So, with the experience gained to date, where does the direction lie from here?
CPM continues to dominate the trends, with continuous, real time feedback and frequent check-ins between manager and employees being at the heart of the process. A move to agile goals that are short term, reiterative and in keeping with new business practice that has emerged.
HR have evolved the art of the one-to-one. No longer left to the imagination of the manager with a loose agenda and a hope that the meeting has happened, HR are now navigating those conversations with a growth and development focus and clear expectations of the discussion to be had. We see a greater shift emphasizing the importance of team and a move away from the individualistic nature of performance management, coupled with a greater focus on future development, rather than an over-emphasis on the judgements of the past.
At Our Tandem, we help organisations build a bridge from their traditional performance management practices to a new future, where they can build strong feedback cultures and growth and development lie at the heart of conversations. Through intuitive, mobile-led technology we guide organisations to take advantage of the practices of agile, creating greater flexibility into their performance practices, while supporting managers to enhance their coaching capability.
Transforming performance management will bring the greatest impact to your employee engagement practices and signals to your people the culture you want to be. Through a combination of technology and strong change management and consultancy advice, we help organisations find a balance between moving to a new future of performance management, at a pace and a plan that fits with their organisational readiness. In 2020, the path is a clearer for performance management transformation and itβs a more rewarding and fulfilling one which should excite any HR professional. We now have the opportunity to change the nature of how performance management comes to life in our organisations and bring a new means of engaging and inspiring our people to deliver on their potential!
